PHILADELPHIA, July 9, 2025 ~ Philadelphia, PA - Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health have received a generous $28 million gift from Sidney Kimmel and his wife, Caroline. The Philadelphia-born businessman, philanthropist, and film producer have been long-time supporters of the institution, with this latest donation strengthening their more than three-decade legacy of generosity.

The Kimmels' latest gift will support critical capital improvements and groundbreaking research at the university. A portion of the funds will go towards the expansion and modernization of the emergency department at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, which will now be known as the Caroline Kimmel Emergency Department. The remaining portion will provide resources for clinical and translational research at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College, furthering Jefferson's ability to turn scientific discoveries into life-changing impact.

"We are incredibly grateful to Sidney and Caroline Kimmel for their continued support," said Joe Cacchione, MD, CEO of Jefferson. "Their remarkable gift is a testament to their personal conviction and public purpose, reaffirming Jefferson's position as a national leader in academic medicine, research, and uncompromising care."

This latest donation continues a long-standing philanthropic relationship between the Kimmels and Jefferson that began in 1995 when Mr. Kimmel made a foundational donation to establish the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Jefferson. Last year, this center earned the highest possible National Cancer Institute designation. In 2014, the Kimmels made a historic $110 million gift that led to the renaming of the Sidney Kimmel Medical College - one of the largest gifts ever given to a medical school in the United States.

"For Caroline and me, this is the right time, project, and place to give," said Sidney Kimmel. "My heart has always been in Philadelphia, and access to high-quality care has never been more important. We are pleased to continue our partnership with Jefferson in building both facilities and research capabilities that will change lives for generations."

The expansion of the emergency department is a response to the growing demand for critical and complex care in the Greater Philadelphia area. With increased capacity, enhanced patient flow, and state-of-the-art trauma facilities, the Caroline Kimmel Emergency Department will serve as the front door of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and a cornerstone of Jefferson Health's efforts to create an accessible, patient-centered health system.

"These upgrades to the emergency department are just the beginning of our long-term vision to redefine what accessible, patient-centered healthcare looks like in our region," said Baligh R. Yehia, MD, MPP, MSc, president of Jefferson Health. "Thanks to the Kimmels, we are making that vision a reality."

The gift to Sidney Kimmel Medical College will also advance Jefferson's scientific enterprise and support its commitment to translating innovative research into real-world treatments.

"We are deeply grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Kimmel for their unwavering dedication to improving lives," said Susan Aldridge, PhD, president of Thomas Jefferson University. "Their generosity and trust in the future of medicine at Jefferson inspire us to strive for even greater excellence as a comprehensive academic medical center and research institution."

Over the past decade, Jefferson has experienced significant growth in its research capabilities, with external grant funding more than tripling. The institution's leadership emphasized the importance of this transformative gift as they enter their third century of advancing human health through science and scholarship.

"Medical education, healthcare, and biomedical research are closely intertwined," said Said Ibrahim, MD, Anthony F. and Gertrude M. DePalma Dean of Sidney Kimmel Medical College. "This gift strengthens that connection by accelerating our development of new discoveries and technologies, finding better ways to treat and cure diseases, and expanding our understanding of life."

Through this donation, the Kimmels have once again positioned themselves at the forefront of a movement that bridges promise with progress, science with society, and health with humanity. Their generosity will have a lasting impact on the future of medicine at Jefferson and beyond.
