ACSM-certified trainer and J&J translational scientist demonstrates how the scientific method transforms athletic performance
PHILADELPHIA - PennZone -- Roohid Parast, a translational scientist at Johnson and Johnson's Springhouse, Pennsylvania facility and a certified personal trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), is drawing attention for his approach to personal fitness, one that treats the human body with the same rigor he applies in the laboratory.
Parast trains across multiple disciplines including strength and hypertrophy training, endurance conditioning, and combat sports. He says the crossover between bench science and gym science is more direct than most people realize.
"In the lab, every intervention has a mechanism," said Parast. "The same is true in training. Understanding why a particular rep range drives myofibrillar hypertrophy, or how lactate threshold affects fast-twitch fiber recruitment, changes the way you approach every session."

Parast's weekly regimen reflects that philosophy. He combines heavy compound lifting with endurance blocks, integrating lactic acid recovery protocols grounded in interval-based clinical exercise research. He has completed half marathons and incorporates hiking and Pilates for mobility, joint health, and active recovery, all supported by precise nutritional planning aligned with Optimum Nutrition principles.
Beyond endurance and strength, Parast trains mixed martial arts, boxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Underground Kings MMA in Newtown, Pennsylvania, the gym founded by UFC veteran Eddie Alvarez.
"Combat sports demand cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and mental toughness all at once," Parast said. "There is no faking fitness on the mat."
Parast holds his ACSM certification alongside his scientific career and is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Artificial Intelligence, expected to be completed in 2026. Learn more at http://linkedin.com/in/roohidparast
