PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 27, 2025 ~ The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has recently announced the launch of their new Center for Microbial Medicine, thanks to generous funding from three major donors. The McCausland Foundation, the Chappell Culpeper Family Foundation, and an anonymous donor have collectively contributed $13 million to support this pioneering initiative.

The primary goal of the center is to bring advancements in microbial medicine directly to pediatric patients in order to improve their overall health. By utilizing advanced sequencing and analytical techniques, the center aims to use a patient's microbiome - the community of organisms living in their gut - to inform clinical decisions. This includes identifying early biomarkers of disease and predicting treatment responses for a wide range of conditions such as inflammatory disorders, metabolic disorders, allergies, and cancer. Additionally, the center plans to develop new treatment options for children by harnessing the power of the microbiome.

In collaboration with experts in infectious disease and clinical diagnostics, the center will also use sequencing technology to track pathogens and infectious disease outbreaks. This will aid in developing prevention strategies and reducing the risk of infection among children at CHOP. The Center for Microbial Medicine will be housed in CHOP's upcoming Morgan Center for Research and Innovation - a state-of-the-art facility designed for seamless bench-to-bedside breakthroughs.

Dr. Joseph Zackular, co-director of the Center for Microbial Medicine, expressed his excitement about this groundbreaking initiative stating, "With these incredible gifts, CHOP will continue to become a world leader in microbial medicine." He also emphasized that this funding will provide unprecedented opportunities for better diagnosis and treatment of pediatric conditions. Dr. Zackular extended his gratitude towards the McCausland Foundation, Chappell Culpeper Family Foundation, and the anonymous donor for their shared commitment towards advancing pediatric research and care.

The McCausland Foundation has been a long-time philanthropic partner of CHOP and has previously established the Adzick-McCausland Distinguished Chair in Fetal and Pediatric Surgery in 2020. Their daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Kyle Salata, have also been strong advocates for CHOP's microbial medicine research initiatives. Similarly, the Chappell Culpeper Family Foundation has a history of funding cutting-edge programs at CHOP, including the Jill and Mark Fishman Center for Lymphatic Disorders. Their support has also contributed to prenatal gene editing research and new technologies for improving recovery from life-threatening injuries.

He expressed his pride in CHOP being at the forefront of pediatric microbial medicine and its potential to make a significant impact on children's healthcare across all disciplines, diseases, and disorders.
