René Bostic, Senior Executive Fellow at The Digital Economist, identifies three converging forces responsible for significant workforce displacement in the United States and introduces a four-step Causal Fairness Framework to address algorithmic bias.

ATLANTA - PennZone -- Research into the 326,000 Black women who exited the United States workforce reveals significant economic implications. In 2025, gender economist Katica Roy estimates the impact on U.S. GDP to be $37 billion, noting in Fortune Magazine that the macroeconomic loss includes not only missing paychecks but also lost productivity, tax revenue, and national output. In 2026, René Bostic, Senior Executive Fellow at The Digital Economist, has expanded upon this research.

From an applied artificial intelligence (AI) perspective, Bostic observed that the same 2025 GDP loss resulted from three forces acting in concert: the timing of U.S. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) rollbacks, the acceleration of AI deployment without adequate guardrails, and the absence of workforce planning to address the human impact. Bostic states, "What emerged as a crisis in 2025 of 326,000 Black women exiting the workforce is becoming a permanent economic drag. Without intervention, algorithmic bias compounds year over year as AI systems trained on 2025's discriminatory outcomes make hiring decisions for 2026 and beyond."

The Three Converging Forces Contributing to the Crisis

No news outlet provided comprehensive answers to the three most important questions:
  • Where did the Black women unemployment numbers originate?
  • How did the United States DEI rollback policy factor into the equation?
  • Did AI contribute to this trend, and if so, how?
Bostic concluded that no single factor was solely responsible. Rather, three converging forces contributed to widespread workforce displacement, validating Katica Roy's 2025 findings and revealing the AI algorithmic mechanism behind them.

Recommended Actions for Organizations

The full opinion piece, titled Beyond the Checkbox: Algorithmic Bias Outsmarting Compliance: 326,000 Jobs, $37 Billion in GDP, and the Algorithmic Bias Behind It All, is available to the public at The Digital Economist. This paper introduces a four-step Causal Fairness Framework designed to guide organizations from symptom detection to addressing the root causes of intersectional algorithmic bias. The publication includes data visualizations such as (1) The Data Gap: Why AI Systems Learn from an Incomplete Picture, (2) Monthly Unemployment Levels of Black Women, 2025, and (3) Black Women's Highest Unemployment Level Since 2021: Rates by Race and Gender, 2020-2025. Bostic states, "Organizations that act now will reduce litigation exposure, retain top talent, and lead the next era of Agentic AI adoption."
