- New Report Reveals Plane Crashes Are Not Where You'd Think
NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla. - PennZone -- One of the biggest decisions that prospective buyers of preowned private jets face is whether or not to buy one that is already enrolled in an engine maintenance program. There are many factors that need to be considered.
"An engine overhaul is the largest single cost a private jet owner will incur if you are not enrolled in an engine maintenance program," said Daniel Jennings, CEO of private jet broker, The Private Jet Company (TPJC). "Whether to purchase an aircraft on an engine program is a complex decision and depends on many factors, including the make, model, and age of the aircraft, how much you plan to fly it, your financial situation, and the availability and cost of spare engines. Overhauling a jet engine can cost millions of dollars."
The Private Jet Company (TPJC) provides sales, acquisition, and a wide range of private aviation consulting services to private jet buyers and sellers.
"Engine overhaul schedules vary by make and model and are determined by both the hours flown and years in service," explained Jennings.
"Having an aircraft on an engine maintenance program means your engine overhaul and midlife event costs are fully covered, so there are no unexpected surprises," explained Jennings. "Whenever you go to sell your aircraft that is enrolled in such a program, you can expect to get a higher price for the aircraft than if it is not. In fact, all plane valuations are based on the assumption that the craft is enrolled in a program."

"On the other hand, it may be more economical for some makes and models to pay for a replacement engine than it is to pay an hourly fee for an engine program. And, of course, the cost of an aircraft not enrolled in an engine program is likely to be less than one that is," Jennings noted.
"The best advice I can give is to consult with an experienced professional private jet broker," said Jennings. "There are many reasons why that is especially critical right now. The market for pre-owned jets is overheated with too many prospective buyers looking for a shrinking number of available aircraft. An experienced broker knows where to find pre-owned jets and how to negotiate the best deal, as well as all the ins and outs of complex depreciation regulations and engine maintenance programs."
Other ways jet brokers can help
Brokers can help private jet buyers, sellers, and owners in several ways: by finding private jets for sale that are off-market or that will come to market after refurbishment, upgrades or major maintenance; by negotiating a private jet sale with sellers using experienced brokers; by advising on financing and tax regulations of buying and owning an aircraft; by finding private jets for sale that could generate charter revenues to lower the acquisition costs; by finding a private jet for sale and knowing operators who will charter it out quickly.
