WASHINGTON, April 25, 2025 ~ Battery Council International (BCI) and the BCI Foundation have announced the selection of the first class of BCI Scholars, a group of three students who will each receive up to $5,000 in financial aid to support their studies in the 2025-2026 academic year. This initiative was formed by the BCI Foundation in recognition of Battery Council International's 100th anniversary on March 21, 2024, with the goal of supporting the next generation of leaders in STEM and the energy storage industry.

According to BCI President and Executive Director Roger Miksad, this scholarship program is a way for BCI's members to continue their long history of charitable support in communities across the U.S. "Our Board of Directors wanted to build on that legacy through these scholarships and ensure that the industry's next 100 years is even more successful," said Miksad. He also congratulated the three selected students for their hard work and thanked everyone who generously donated to make this first-ever class of BCI Scholars possible.

The scholarships provided by the BCI Foundation fall into two categories. The first is the BCI Battery Chemistry and STEM Scholarship, which supports individuals studying electrochemistry, science, technology, engineering, mathematics or a related technical discipline that will contribute to energy storage applications. In partnership with Women in the Global Battery Industry (WGBI), BCI has made a commitment to award at least one scholarship to a woman recipient as part of its efforts to promote diversity in the industry. This year's recipients for this scholarship are Sophia Anderson from Schwenksville, Pa., and Leaf Evergreen from Hillsboro, Ore.

The second category is The BCI Community Scholarship, which supports individuals who are either employees or direct family members of employees currently working in a BCI-member company. The recipient for this year's scholarship is Summer Sapp from Russell Springs, Ky.

The initial funding for the BCI Foundation came in part from a $10,000 "challenge grant" from battery separator specialist ENTEK. Additionally, battery separator supplier Daramic also generously contributed with a separate $5,000 award. Other contributions to the BCI Foundation came from the Centennial Sponsors of BCI's 100th anniversary celebration that took place during its annual conference in April. These sponsors include Banner, C&D Trojan, Clarios, Crown Battery, Duncan, East Penn, EnerSys, GS Yuasa, Leoch Battery, Moura, Rolls Battery Engineering, Stryten Energy, Superior Battery and U.S. Battery Manufacturing Company.

The BCI Foundation scholarships are administered by the University of the Aftermarket Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing funding for aftermarket education programs and research.
