PHILADELPHIA, March 28, 2025 ~ Philadelphia, PA - The Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia (JASGP) and Philadelphia Insurance Companies (PHLY) have joined forces to launch the PHLY250Sakura Cherry Blossom Tree Planting Initiative. This initiative aims to plant 250 cherry blossom trees in Philadelphia by 2026, in honor of America's semiquincentennial (250th) anniversary.
The project, which began in 2024, is a collaborative effort between the two organizations and is funded by a generous $135,000 grant from PHLY to the Japan America Society. This initiative not only celebrates America's milestone anniversary but also serves as a symbol of the strong relationship between the United States and Japan.
Brian O'Reilly, executive vice president and chief marketing officer at Philadelphia Insurance Companies, expressed his excitement about this project. "This is a harmonious opportunity to support the community that has been our home for over 60 years, along with the culture of our Japanese-based parent company," he said. "The environmental, social, and cultural significance of this program sustains the legacy of a gift from 100 years ago. It's a privilege for our company and employees to have a part in maintaining this history and supporting the city."

To kick off this initiative, volunteers from Philadelphia Insurance Companies and the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia joined representatives from Philadelphia Parks and Recreation for a special ceremony in Fairmount Park. The event included traditional Japanese customs such as the Daruma doll, which symbolizes the start and completion of the project.
Kazumi Teune, executive director of the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia, highlighted the historical significance behind this initiative. "In 1926, the Government of Japan gifted 1,600 flowering trees to the City of Philadelphia in honor of America's sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary," she explained. "In 1998, we continued this legacy and began a ten-year, 1,000-tree planting campaign, which are the trees seen across the city. It's only fitting that an additional 250 trees are being planted to celebrate America's 250th anniversary. These beautiful trees will blossom for decades and truly honor the relationship between the United States and Japan."

The ceremonial planting of the PHLY250Sakura Cherry Blossom Trees took place ahead of the annual Cherry Blossom Festival on April 5th and 6th at the Fairmount Park Horticulture Center and Shofuso Japanese Cultural Center. This festival celebrates the beauty of Japanese Sakura - the flowering cherry blossom trees that adorn Philadelphia's streets with their vibrant pink blossoms.
