PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 29, 2024 ~ The National Constitution Center has announced the launch of the Sutherland Teaching Program, thanks to a generous donation from the Sutherland Family. This program aims to expand the Center's reach among educators and students, with the goal of increasing civic knowledge and promoting civil discourse in preparation for America's 250th anniversary in 2026.

President and CEO of the National Constitution Center, Jeffrey Rosen, expressed his gratitude for the Sutherland family's contribution. "All of us at the NCC are so grateful to Fred and Barbara Sutherland for investing in our exciting new resources for America's 250th," he said. "This wonderful gift will empower so many teachers and students to learn about the Constitution and the core principles of the American idea."

Thanks to this funding, the Center will be able to raise awareness among educators in all 50 states about its nonpartisan constitutional education materials and programs. This includes providing more professional development programs and trainings both on site at the Center and in various states and localities across the country. Additionally, there are plans to expand and deepen their work with their Teacher Advisory Board and Teacher Advisory Council. The gift will also support new educational programs and resources related to America's upcoming milestone.

Julie Silverbrook, vice president of Civic Education at the National Constitution Center, emphasized the importance of this program in shaping future generations. "Classrooms have been described as cradles of constitutional democracy, and teachers are truly guardians of the Constitution," she stated. "The Sutherland Teaching Program will ensure that educators across the country are equipped with the best resources to teach their students about our nation's constitutional history and its contemporary relevance."

Silverbrook also noted that this donation comes at a crucial time as both the Center and the nation prepare for America's 250th birthday in 2026. She believes that this program will inspire millions of students around the country to learn, understand, preserve, protect, and perfect the grand experiment in constitutional democracy that was entrusted to the American people by their forebears.

The National Constitution Center is grateful for the Sutherland family's support and looks forward to the impact this program will have on future generations of Americans.
