Harrisburg, PA ~ Pennsylvania is a leader in energy production, and Governor Shapiro is committed to continuing this legacy while also protecting the health and safety of Pennsylvanians. Last week, Darrin Kelly, President of the Allegheny/Fayette Central Labor Council, praised Governor Shapiro's efforts in an opinion piece for PennLive.
In the opinion piece, Kelly noted that Pennsylvania has long been a leader in energy production and that more than 250,000 Pennsylvanians are employed in energy jobs. He also highlighted the importance of protecting union workers and their families while investing in the energy sector.
To ensure public health and safety are prioritized, Governor Shapiro recently collaborated with CNX Resources to create a plan that will disclose every chemical used in their operations and conduct transparent air monitoring at their well pad in Washington County. The data collected will be posted online for everyone to access. Additionally, CNX has agreed to voluntary setbacks around places like schools and hospitals that go beyond what is currently required.

Kelly believes that common sense environmental policy and a thriving energy economy can coexist. He said "We do not need to choose between protecting good paying unions jobs in the energy sector and protecting our environment. Those two things go hand in hand here in Pennsylvania."
Governor Shapiro's commitment to keeping Pennsylvania an energy leader while also protecting public health and safety is being applauded by labor, environmental, and business leaders alike. His administration is working hard to ensure the energy industry stays in Pennsylvania and continues to create jobs here while keeping people safe.
