SAN ANTONIO, April 8, 2024 ~ On a seemingly ordinary Monday morning in May of 2011, OB/GYN Dr. Aysun Alagoz's life was turned upside down. Little did she know, her career and private practice were about to be threatened by a powerful hospital administrator who labeled her as a "Disruptive Physician." This accusation made her the target of a common and unethical practice used by hospitals known as the Peer Review.
Dr. Alagoz has since become a symbol of resilience, integrity, and advocacy in the healthcare industry. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by healthcare professionals, especially in an era marked by burnout, administrative scrutiny, and systemic injustices.
The Peer Review is a discipline-specific evaluation of a practitioner's performance that is backed by law and used as a tool by medical corporations and their representatives. When used correctly, it can ensure quality and standardized levels of medical care for patients. However, when used punitively in what is known as a Sham Peer Review, it can be manipulated to fire physicians, install handpicked individuals, leave patients without care, and save hospitals money - all without due process.

According to Dr. Alagoz, "The Sham Peer Review is an open dirty secret in the U.S. healthcare system." Patients are often unaware of its existence until their doctor suddenly disappears from their lives. However, physicians are all too familiar with this practice used by hospital administrators and boards to remove doctors they do not like or disagree with or as a way to cut costs for healthcare corporations.
Protected by the 1986 Health Quality Information Act, hospital review boards have absolute immunity from scrutiny for their decisions. This leaves doctors with no way to appeal or clear their names if falsely accused - resulting in ruined careers and countless patients left without care. Meanwhile, corporations and hospitals continue to profit.
Dr. Alagoz's own experience mirrors that of many other physicians who have been falsely accused. The allegations against her were never substantiated or proven, yet she was immediately blacklisted and reported to the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) - a database that can ruin a physician's career.

"Falsely accused doctors find themselves suddenly unemployed and blacklisted - though we still retain our medical licenses because malpractice was never the issue," Dr. Alagoz explained. "We are left in an impossible situation, branded as unruly physicians with no way to clear our names." In response, she wrote her memoir, "The Medical Matrix," to expose this corrupt practice and call for reform.
Dr. Alagoz's book sheds light on the need for protective measures to ensure doctors can provide the best care without fear of unwarranted persecution. Her story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and a call to action for those who believe in a just and equitable healthcare system.
