Generative Art at the Threshold of Pixel and Pigment. A Solo Show by Digital Artist, Rapha
PHILADELPHIA - PennZone -- Colonna Contemporary is proud to announce its first exhibition devoted entirely to generative art: Transitions by New York–based artist Rapha. Opening October 10, this landmark show positions code itself as both medium and muse, exploring the liminal space where digital precision meets painterly depth.
In Transitions, Rapha composes with algorithms instead of brushes, using repetition, randomness, and layering to generate visual environments that hover between the mathematical and the organic. Rectangles of color accumulate in stacked fields until their edges dissolve into softness, evoking paint, but never fully abandoning their digital identity. The perfect grid, the crisp pixel, these remain visible, reminding us that behind each image lies a dialogue between artist and machine.
"Writing code to make art feels strange," Rapha notes. "The computer doesn't do what you want, it does what you tell it to do. That gap is where the art lives. I can't draw 500,000 squares, but I can ask the machine to. And in that repetition, in those impossible acts, something unexpected and beautiful emerges."
More on The PennZone
Rapha has been an active voice in the generative art movement for over a decade, creating real-time, browser-based works that foreground slowness, meditation, and chance. Since 2018, he has also engaged blockchain technologies, weaving questions of digital provenance into his practice. With an extensive international exhibition record, Rapha is recognized as one of the leading figures pushing the boundaries of code-based art.
With Transitions, Colonna Contemporary deepens its mission of bridging pigment and pixel, bringing together audiences who collect traditional art with those drawn to the conceptual rigor of generative practice. The exhibition raises timely questions: Where does the digital end and the analog begin? Can code hold the gesture of a brush? What happens when the unexpected is coded into the creative act?
