York County, PA is an EPA Radon Zone 1 county. A new guide explains why published county averages disagree and why a short-term test is the only number that matters for your house.

YORK, Pa. - PennZone -- YORK, PA - York County sits in EPA Radon Zone 1, the highest category, meaning the EPA predicts an average indoor screening level above 4 pCi/L. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection says roughly 40 percent of homes tested in the state read above that action level.

Radon Mitigation York Pennsylvania has published a plain-language guide to York County radon levels for homeowners who are searching for a number and finding several that do not match. In four published sources the county average ranged from about 9.85 to 13.2 pCi/L. The guide explains why: the datasets come from different test-kit vendors, short-term and long-term tests get mixed together, and people tend to test because they already suspect a problem, so every published average skews high by an unknown amount.

The takeaway for homeowners is practical. A county average cannot describe one house. Radon depends on the soil under that foundation, the cracks in that slab, and how the building pulls air up through itself, so two neighboring houses can test several pCi/L apart. A short-term test kit costs about fifteen dollars and answers the question for a specific home.
