TRIANGLE, Va., Dec. 5, 2024 ~ The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation and the U.S. Mint have joined forces to kick off the celebration of the Marine Corps' 250th anniversary. The event took place on December 4th at the United States Mint in Philadelphia, where commemorative coins were struck to honor this momentous occasion.
The Gold, Silver, and Clad Coins feature iconic imagery that represents the Marine Corps' rich legacy of service and valor. From the famous flag-raising at Iwo Jima to historic and modern uniforms, these coins pay tribute to the brave men and women who have served in the Marine Corps for 250 years.

MajGen James Lukeman, President and CEO of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation; Kristie McNally, Deputy Director of the United States Mint; and General Christopher Mahoney, Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps were present at the ceremony to showcase the first set of freshly minted coins.
Retired Marine Major General James Lukeman, who now serves as president and CEO of the Foundation, expressed his excitement for this milestone anniversary. "The 250th birthday presents a historic opportunity to connect all Americans with their Marine Corps throughout the year," he said. "For 250 years, Marines have fought for America's future and epitomized the honor, courage, and selfless service that the Marine Corps is famous for."

The celebration of this significant anniversary will continue throughout 2025 with various programs and events that highlight the Marine Corps' warfighting legacy and values of honor, courage, and commitment. These include:
- The 50-State Birthday Cake Cutting Program: Traditional cake cutting ceremonies will be held in all 50 states in coordination with governors' offices.
- The Marine Corps PSA: A new Public Service Announcement will celebrate the unbreakable connection between Corps and Country.
- Marines Across America: This program will showcase the impact that Marines have made in their communities and beyond after their service. Members of the public can share stories of Marines they know at Marine250.com or with #MarinesAcrossAmerica.
- Sports Events Across the Nation: The Marine Corps will be honored at various sporting events, including Notre Dame vs. Navy, the NASCAR Marine Corps 250, Minor League Baseball games, and state championships with the National Federation of State High School Associations.
- National Museum of the Marine Corps: The museum will feature new exhibits that explore Marine history and personal stories in an immersive way.

- Traveling Combat Art Exhibit: The second traveling combat art exhibit, "The U.S. Marine Corps Air-Ground Team," will open in January at The Citadel in Charleston.
- Library of Congress Exhibit: A special collection display featuring Marine artifacts will be on display at the Library of Congress in October and November 2025. Individuals can also share the story of a veteran in their life with the Library of Congress Veterans History Project by visiting loc.gov/vets.
- Birthday in a Box: Digital resources will be provided for communities and organizations to host their own local Marine Corps birthday celebrations.
- Honorary Marines: Less than 100 individuals who have made extraordinary contributions will be celebrated as Honorary Marines.
- Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show: Lance Corporal Chesty, the beloved bulldog mascot of the Marine Corps, will participate in presenting the colors at this event in February at Madison Square Garden.
