Experts are invited to help improve hydrogen market transparency and develop new protocols for measuring hydrogen GHG emissions at the production facility level
SEOUL, South Korea - PennZone -- Levinger Regens, an established financial advisory and strategic consultancy services provider with deep market knowledge, a dynamic network of information, and derivatives solutions, today announced the launch of the Public Hydrogen Initiative (PHI), a joint project aimed at increasing transparency in the environmental impact of hydrogen generation and assisting as a key driver of energy transitions.
Even when employing the same technologies or methods, the carbon intensity of hydrogen production varies significantly. To properly depict the environmental credentials of a given kilogram of hydrogen generated and overcome the constraints of the "color wheel" labeling paradigm, precise measurements of hydrogen's carbon intensity at the production site (also known as the asset level) are required. Stakeholders across the value chain, including producers, users, engineers, academia, market participants, investors, and regulators, would benefit from an apples-to-apples comparison of hydrogen production carbon intensity.

PHI's purpose is to provide objective, reliable, peer-reviewed, transparent, and open-source technologies that allow hydrogen value chain stakeholders to measure the carbon intensity of hydrogen at the asset level. The development and implementation of these technical standards will contribute to the development and harmonization of the hydrogen market, the contextualization of climate solutions, the advancement of transparency, and the support of global low-carbon hydrogen trading.
"As the use of hydrogen expands, more advanced measurement technologies are required to evaluate the carbon intensity implications of this energy source. This world-class partnership will transform how the world monitors and benchmarks the carbon intensity of hydrogen production by leveraging the strengths of our respective businesses to build intelligent market-ready solutions", said Ghim Byung, Head of Power Trading at Levinger Regens.
The inclusion of a variety of perspectives and real-world insights is critical to success. PHI can bring together stakeholders from all sectors of the hydrogen industry to build a measurement approach that will improve transparency around hydrogen production's carbon intensity.
