MISSION VIEJO, Calif. - PennZone -- HLN's Immunization Calculation Engine (ICE) open-source software system helps clinicians, public health, and individuals stay on top of ever-changing and increasingly complex immunization recommendations. For COVID-19 alone, HLN released more than ten updates to ICE since the pandemic began in 2020. These updates support accurate evaluation and forecasting of COVID-19 immunizations, helping ensure individuals stay up to date given the latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations.
In its latest update (v 1.38.1) released on March 17, 2023, HLN added support for additional COVID vaccines and made necessary changes to the booster recommendations. Additional DTP and Polio vaccines were also added, as well as some minor logic changes to rules related to Orthopoxvirus and Hep B. You can see release notes for all ICE versions, as well as complete documentation, runtime and source code.

ICE supports COVID-19 recommendations for FDA-authorized and ACIP-approved vaccines, WHO-authorized vaccines, and vaccine candidates active in U.S.-based clinical trials. HLN will continue to monitor vaccine updates to ensure ICE supports the latest immunization recommendations for children, adolescents, and adults for COVID-19 and across sixteen additional vaccine groups.
By translating recommendations into a rules-based service available for use in immunization information systems (IIS), electronic health record (EHR) systems, and personal health record (PHR) systems, ICE provides decision support on what immunizations are due and when. Recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Vaccine Program Office and the Digital Public Goods Alliance, ICE is an innovative tool to support clinical immunization workflows and decrease the burden of preventable disease. Interested to learn more about this free, open-source service and learn how it can support your immunization needs? See https://www.hln.com/ice/ and reach out to ice@hln.com.
